Biography

Before coming to Mette, Mike had a long history in private practice, as corporate general counsel, and in public service. Mike’s private practice began in California, where he focused on business law, securities, and real estate, representing small and large corporations. He moved back home to Pennsylvania and became House Counsel for Weis Markets, a position he held for over 7 years. He then became General Counsel for Sheetz, Inc. for 15 years. This experience has given Mike an extensive background in corporate strategic planning, business law, real estate, human relations, contracts, corporate structure, litigation management, and government affairs.

More importantly, Mike gained valuable insight into business and family businesses in particular. He learned the priorities of small business owners and families, worked closely with outside trust and estate counsel, and used his legal knowledge to help them achieve their goals. Mike also served in various capacities with a number of state and national associations, including his service as chair of the legal committee within the National Association of Convenience Stores, chair of the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association’s legislative committee, and member of the PFMA Convenience Store Council.

In 2011, Mike was asked by the administration of then-Governor Corbett to join his team and help administer the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Mike served as Deputy Secretary of Administration and Senior Advisor to the Secretary. He handled all aspects of the Department’s administration and oversaw various programs that provided funding to localities and businesses.

Finally, in 2016 Mike became legal counsel to Senator Lisa Baker and was the Executive Director of the Labor & Industry, Health & Human Services and Judiciary Committees for which Senator Baker was then Chair.. Mike’s open and fair-minded approach allowed him to reach across the aisle and overcome obstacles in order to draft and help pass legislation that had been languishing or that many thought was too controversial or simply could not get done.

Mike desires to give back to his community. As a result, he has served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations and business and civic organizations.

Mike is married with four children and nine grandchildren.
