Pennsylvania Property Tax Appeal
Deadlines Looming
The deadline for appealing real estate property tax assessments is fast approaching. Most counties in Pennsylvania have established August 1 or September 1 deadlines. Property owners should have already received assessment notices in the mail, which detail the valuation of property and home that the taxes for 2011 will be calculated.
Property owners have the right to challenge the reassessed value, but must do so before the appeal deadline. Failure to file an appeal on time means that they property owner will be bound by the newly assessed value for the upcoming 2011 tax period and beyond.
It's important that property owners review their assessments to determine if the stated value is in line with the current fair market value and whether or not an appeal is necessary. Given the impact the economic downturn has had on real estate values, property owners should be wary that assessments are not overstated, resulting in paying too much in taxes.
