Electric Power ChoiceA law signed in 1996 gives Pennsylvanians the right to choose the company that generates their electricity. January 1, 2010 is the date by which most electric power customers in the central part of Pennsylvania must act to make this choice. If a choice is not made, the customer will remain with their electric supplier at higher rates than they are now paying. This will have an impact on every electric power customer, but large commercial users have added incentive to investigate the options and make their choice. The process is not easy. Each of the licensed electric suppliers in the state has different electric contracts, letters of authorization to review past electric usage as well as letters of authorization to review credit history. It is important that consumers begin shopping for power NOW as it is a complicated and time-consuming process Once a supplier has been selected, a contract will be provided that describes the relationship between the electric supplier and the consumer. These contracts should be reviewed by legal counsel before signing because of the impact of the various terms and conditions, including the cancellation or termination clauses. Only Licensed Suppliers are authorized to provide electric service in Pennsylvania. If you would like further information about selecting, choosing, and negotiating with an electric supplier, please call Mette, Evans & Woodside at 717-232-5000. |
